I’ve noticed a lot of people getting really upset lately about the presidential election.

This particular cycle is Trump/Clinton, but people seem to get upset every cycle.

There are angry fights on FB threads and forums, in bars and restaurants. I’ve read that the divorce rate goes up during election years.

It makes zero fucking sense.

Has a modern president affected your life in a meaningful way? Almost definitely not.

Unless you work in politics, the chances that the next president will affect your life are even slimmer.

Beyond that, you have no idea who will be a good president or a bad one. I know it feels like you do, but you really don’t.

Do you even know what a president does with most of their time? I sure as hell don’t. And even if you did, you don’t know what is going to happen in the next four years.

And even in the past, where we know exactly what happened, smart people disagree about whether specific presidents were good or bad.

I know it feels like a big choice, but it’s really not.

Here’s what this election is really like.

It’s like you’re running a job interview, except you can’t ask the candidates questions, they won’t answer truthfully, and you don’t even know what the job is!

Even if you had some sort of psychic powers, and knew what the future held, and what presidents should ideally do in that situation, and what was actually going on in the candidate’s heads, your vote still doesn’t matter, because so many people are voting.

So you have a situation where you can’t possibly make a good decision, and it doesn’t matter what decision you make anyway.

That sounds like stress-free living to me.

You can’t change a damn thing about the election, so stop wasting mental energy on it and do something productive instead.

And while you’re at it, be happy. It will make everything seem much better, no matter what happens. 🙂
